From the perspective of a professional master of ceremonies
Your wedding day is one of the most beautiful days of your life. You spend months, sometimes even years, on the preparations. Yet, as a wedding planner, I regularly see the same mistakes recurring at weddings. Fortunately, most problems are easy to prevent with good preparation and a clear plan.
At Chapter One Weddings, I guide couples towards a relaxed and carefree wedding day. That is why, in this blog, I am sharing the 10 most common mistakes I see at weddings, and how you can avoid them.
1. The script is not realistic
A common mistake is a schedule that is too tight. A ceremony runs over, guests arrive later than expected, or a photoshoot takes longer.
How do you prevent this?
Plan sufficient buffer time between important parts of the day. A professional master of ceremonies takes unexpected situations into account and ensures that minor delays do not immediately disrupt the entire schedule.
Tip: Reserve a buffer of at least 15 to 30 minutes per important program item.
No one knows who the point of contact is.
On the wedding day, suppliers, guests, and family members often have questions. When there is no clear point of contact, all questions end up with the bridal couple.
How do you prevent this?
Ensure you have one central contact person who handles all communication. This is precisely why many couples choose a professional master of ceremonies.
At Chapter One Weddings, I take this role completely off your hands so that you can enjoy your day.
3. The ceremony starts late
Late guests frequently cause delays. This can cause stress, especially at an outdoor venue or a ceremony at a special location.
How do you prevent this?
Clearly communicate the start time and let guests know that they must arrive at least 30 minutes early.
A good master of ceremonies keeps an eye on the arrival of guests and ensures that everyone is seated on time.
4. The weather is underestimated
Especially in the Netherlands, the weather can change unexpectedly. A beautiful outdoor ceremony can suddenly turn into a wet challenge.
How do you prevent this?
Always have a plan B. Discuss the alternatives with the venue in advance in case of rain, strong winds, or extreme heat.
Tip: An emergency plan provides peace of mind, even if you ultimately don't need it.
5. Suppliers are not well aligned
The photographer doesn't know when the ceremony starts, the DJ misses an important announcement, or the caterer isn't ready yet.
How do you prevent this?
Ensure that all suppliers have the same playbook and know who to contact with questions.
An experienced master of ceremonies maintains an overview and ensures that all parties work together seamlessly. 6. The photoshoot takes longer than planned.
Couples often underestimate how much time a photoshoot takes. This causes delays in the schedule.
How do you prevent this?
Discuss with the photographer in advance how much time is needed and take travel time between locations into account.
It is better to plan a little more generously than too tightly. This way, you avoid unnecessary stress.
7. Speeches run over
Everyone knows that one speaker who says "I'll keep it short" and then talks for twenty minutes.
How do you prevent this?
Make clear agreements about speaking time in advance.
A master of ceremonies can guide speakers and, if necessary, subtly indicate when it is time to wrap up.
8. Guests do not know what is expected of them
Where should they park? When does dinner start? Are children welcome?
Unclear information causes many questions and unrest.
How do you prevent this?
Create a clear information page on your wedding website or send an overview to all guests in advance.
Consider:
Parking information
Dress code
Schedule
Gift wishes
Contact details of the master of ceremonies
9. The bridal couple tries to arrange everything themselves.
This is perhaps the biggest mistake I see.
Many couples remain busy with practical matters on their wedding day: receiving suppliers, guiding guests, and solving problems.
How do you prevent this?
Let go.
Your wedding day is about enjoying yourselves, not organizing. By handing over responsibilities, you can be fully present in the moment.
10. There is no emergency plan for unexpected situations
A sick supplier, a forgotten corsage, or a technical malfunction: something can always happen.
How do you prevent this?
Create an emergency scenario in advance for important parts of the day.
A professional master of ceremonies thinks ahead, solves problems before they become visible, and ensures that you won't notice a thing.
A wedding consists of hundreds of small details. When everything goes well, it seems as if it happens effortlessly. In reality, there is often a great deal of preparation and coordination behind it.
At Chapter One Weddings, I ensure that your wedding day runs smoothly, suppliers work well together, and you can fully enjoy every special moment.
Because on your wedding day, you deserve to be busy with each other, not with the organization.
